Bishop Dedicates St Charles Chapel Enhancements, New Altar
The Catholic Times of the Diocese of Columbus reports on the dedication of a new hand-carved wooden altar at St Charles Preparatory School’s Mother of Mercy Chapel by Bishop Earl Fernandes on 13 August 2025, the anniversary to the day of the chapel’s dedication to Our Lady of Mercy in 1937.
The ten-month project, directed by William Heyer with general contractor CK Construction, encircled Rudolph Scheffler’s 1950s apse painting of Christ the King with a new set of iconic figures and symbols, added saints and Marian inscriptions above the arcades, new marble steps at the altar and tabernacle, beautified side shrines to Mary and St Joseph, and wooden frames for the Stations of the Cross. The choir loft was expanded, the mechanical, sound, and lighting systems were overhauled, and a new brick and limestone entryway with a vaulted barrel ceiling now leads to the chapel. A limestone and mosaic reredos was to follow.
