Restoring Sacred Architecture to a Higher Plane

In June 2014, the National Catholic Register traced the origin story behind the firm — from a formative encounter at the London Oratory to the influence of Fr George Rutler, to the famous postcard from Thomas Gordon Smith that brought Bill to the Notre Dame School of Architecture, and eventually to John Paul II’s address to artists in the Sistine Chapel in 1999.

It remains the best single account of how the firm’s theological and architectural convictions took shape — and of the line of succession that connects the classical renewal at Notre Dame to the projects William Heyer Architect carries out today.
