Verona: A Visit to Arte Poli

A visit to Verona and the workshops of Arte Poli, where the marble and mosaic elements for the Cathedral of St Joseph in Jefferson City are being fabricated. Arte Poli is an exceptional operation — craftspeople working in the tradition of Italian ecclesiastical art, in a workshop environment where the relationship between design intent and material execution is close and continuous.

Seeing the panels in progress — the stone being cut, the tesserae being sorted and set — is a reminder that the finished building is always the product of many hands, many hours, and a shared understanding of what the work is for.
